Beginners often ask whether to use a website builder or buy hosting. The right choice depends on how much time, control and technical work you want.
Website builders
A website builder gives you design tools, hosting and often a domain in one package. You pick a template and edit it with your mouse.
- Good: fast to start, no technical skills needed, support included.
- Not so good: less freedom to customize, and it can be harder to move your site later.
Web hosting
With hosting you rent space on a server and install your own website software, such as WordPress, or upload your own files.
- Good: full control, more plugins and tools, and easy to grow.
- Not so good: you must learn the basics, manage updates and look after security and backups.
A free option: static website hosting
If your site is simple, with pages of text, images and links, you can host it for free using a static site service such as GitHub Pages. This is a good way to learn without monthly costs.
How to decide
- You want to launch this week and have no technical skills: a website builder.
- You plan a blog that will grow large: hosting with WordPress, or a static site.
- You want to sell products: a store platform or a builder with store features.
- You want the lowest cost: a free static site, plus the cost of a domain name.
