You do not need to be a security expert to protect your business. These ten habits stop most common problems.
The checklist
- Use a password manager. It creates and remembers strong passwords for you.
- Use a different password for every account. One leaked password should not open everything.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for email, banking, hosting and social accounts.
- Protect your email first. If someone controls your email, they can reset your other accounts.
- Keep devices and apps updated. Updates fix security problems.
- Back up important files automatically, in more than one place.
- Be careful with links and attachments. Check the sender, and never share verification codes.
- Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi, or avoid sensitive logins on unknown networks.
- Limit who has access. Give people only what they need, and remove access when they leave.
- Check for breaches. Use a breach-checking service to see if your email has leaked, and change passwords if so.
Where to start
If this feels like a lot, begin with three things today: a password manager, two-factor authentication on your email, and an automatic backup.
